Three reasons, none of them hype. Verified data, ordinary wallets, and fees that stay small.
This article described an earlier plan for Family Basecamp that is no longer how the system works. We're leaving it up rather than deleting it, because we'd rather be honest about what changed than pretend it never existed.
Family Basecamp does not use a blockchain. There is no smart contract, no Data Connector, and no wallet to install. Everything described in this article was part of the earlier plan.
The honest answer is that a blockchain's whole purpose is enabling ownership and trading without a central authority, and that is exactly what we did not want for a system meant to be recognition, not an investment. A plain, ordinary database record does the job more simply, and more safely.
The recognition system today carries no ownership, no payout, and nothing that can be bought, sold, or traded. What it recognizes is real: families who showed up, and families who helped others do the same.
Where the current, symbolic recognition system is explained in full.
